I have always loved basset hounds from a distance. I never had the pleasure of meeting one as a kid but I loved seeing photos and video clips showcasing their long ears and big personalities. Basset hounds were definitely on my photography bucket list since I started specializing in pet portraits a few years ago.
When Joel contacted me about documenting their senior basset hounds, I could not wait to meet them. True to hounds, Watson was very talkative and never turned off his howl. Sweet Genny had a portion of one ear removed for health reasons but that made her no less adorable. We had a lot of fun getting to know these two.
Photographing senior dogs is something I find very rewarding. Seeing a dog that has been so loved and cherished get to be preserved in professional photos is very meaningful. It was clear that Watson and Genny’s owners did not want to miss the opportunity to have these pictures.
About Genny and Watson:
Where did you get them? Our neighbors in graduate school found Genny on the side of the road (weirdly enough, on the exit to my hometown, which is about a hundred miles away from the University. They were coming back from a sporting event). We found Watson through BROOD, which is a basset rescue organization in Virginia.
Names and ages? Genny is about 14. Watson is about 11.
How did you choose their names? Genny’s name was given to her by the people who found her. She’s named after a cheep beer. Sigh, what can you do? Watson was always going to be the sidekick. He’s named after Sherlock Holmes’ partner, Dr. Watson.
What 3 words would you use to describe each of their personalities? Genny is adventurous, hungry, and bossy. Watson is a loyal, gentle, slow poke.
What is their favorite toy or treat? Both prefer walks or snacks over toys. They love peanut butter.
