Mr. Wolf. Horse Portrait Photography In Toledo.

From Photographer Jessica:

For as long as I can remember my favorite animal has been a horse. I was lucky enough to take horseback riding lessons in junior high at a farm in Temperance Michigan. I worked at the farm to help pay for those lessons and seeing the horses day to day showed me how different each one’s personality can be. I got to interact with a rescue horse who had survived abuse and had long term behavior challenges because of it. Just like dogs, a horse has an innate personality but they can also be molded by their treatment and experiences. My contact with dogs and horses has taught me that every animal has different needs when working with them. It is our primary job as photographers to make sure each animal feels safe and respected while we document them.

When Rebecca asked me what I wanted to do for our Fluff-uary promotion, one of my first thoughts was horses. I knew that photographing horses would be a challenge but that it would be truly rewarding to document their beauty and personality for their owners who love them. Working with Wolf and his owner Heather was a dream. Wolf definitely has a big personality but he was more then willing to pose for the camera. It was cool to see his relationship with Heather and how he trusted and payed attention to her.

Read on to find out more about the handsome Mr. Wolf!

From Heather:

  • Where did you get him and how old was he when you brought him home? Mr. Wolf MCHF is his registered name. His breed is Haflinger. He came "for a visit and trial run" in 2005 and never left! I bought him from Kathy and Matt Brown. Matt was my farrier at the time and knew I was looking for another Haflinger to round out my herd.

  • How did you choose his name? In the Haflinger breed, when a foal is born if it is a male it's name will start with the first letter of the sire (father), and if a fully the first letter of the mother.

  • How old is he now? He is 26 years old.

  • What 3 words would you use to describe his personality and why? He is stately. I love watching him when he trots and gallops around the yard, head held high as if to say Hello World look at me! He is sweet. He will come up to me and nudge me for treats and attention and calls to me if I am late for feeding time. He is challenging and has attitude! He has a will of his own and sometimes will test me to make sure I want him to do what I'm asking. Kinda like Hey Mom.... do you really want me to do that??? . Are you sure you didn't mean this?

  • What is his favorite treat or activity? His favorite treat....it's a tie... candy canes and cotton candy! PURE SUGAR. Every year when we would show at fair the last day each horse would get its own BIG bag of cotton candy.

  • What do you enjoy about having him as part of your life? I enjoy having him in my life because although he has attitude it keeps me on my game. He is beautiful to watch relaxing in the pasture and I love when he looks out of the barn and nickers to me.
