Dash The Rescue Dog. Dog Photo Session. Luckey Road Lavender Farm

I met Dash when he was just a couple weeks old. The tiniest little nugget, just born. Dash’s mama, Chloe, was a rescue dog found very emaciated on the street. She was found to be pregnant when she was taken in by a foster with Planned Pethood. From the start, it was clear her puppies might struggle due to her health and condition. Dash was the only in the litter puppy to survive.

Dash needed round the clock care and monitoring from day one to ensure he made it. His foster family invested so much of their time and hearts in him that they fell in love and knew he had to be a permanent part of their home. Dash is a true survivor and knowing him now, you can tell he had the fight and the vivacious personality needed to thrive no matter what.

Dash came to model for some pet portraits for me in a lavender field. He is a most handsome and energetic boy. Read on to hear from his family more about his story!

Get to know Dash:

  • Where did you get him? How old was he when you brought him home? Dash's mom, Chloe came to us from a rural Ohio pound. We did not know she was pregnant when we took her. She was such a sweet girl that we decided to continue to foster her when we found out she was pregnant. Chloe wound up having to have a c-section after a uterine rupture. The puppies were very premature. He was only 1/2 lb. when he was born. Mama was unable to feed them and so they were bottle fed. Out of 8 puppies, only two survived past 24 hours and we lost his brother, Duke just shy of a week old. Dash was diagnosed with failure to thrive and barely survived. He didn't top his birth weight until he was 3 weeks old. We adopted him from Planned Pethood at 12 weeks old.

  • How did you choose his name? His whole litter was D names. We're big Disney fans so Dash from The Incredibles

  • How old is he now? He turned 1 on June 2

  • What 3 words would you use to describe his personality? Goofy, Playful, Loving.

  • What is his favorite toy? He has a 3 inch long ducky that was a puppy toy he got when he was tiny. He is so gentle with his ducky

  • What do you enjoy doing together? He could chase a ball for hours. He's also a great snuggle

  • A favorite memory of him or a hard time that he helped you get through? He suffered a fractured vertebrae in his neck, a chipped pelvis and a completely crushed vertebrae mid-back at 6 weeks old. We weren't sure he would even survive, let alone walk. He was too tiny to do surgery. All we could do was crate rest and wait. It was agonizing. But he's a fighter. He not only walks, he runs and jumps and climbs. He still has neurological damage but he's a happy pup.

  • Why is it meaningful to have professional images of him? We've been through everything with him. He's very special to us. I've had him since he was 20 minutes old. We went through vets telling us at a week old to take him home and wait to see if he will survive. We went through the uncertainty of his injury and not knowing what his life would be like. To now, we have this happy, healthy boy who is an absolute joy. It's been a journey and I'm so glad to have these photos to document how special he is.

  • What stood out to you about your experience with Rebecca? Rebecca is a dream to work with. She is so knowledgeable on how to get great shots from these dogs. Dash had no interest in sitting still. He just wanted a cookie and kisses and she still got some incredible shots of him. She's so flexible and patient with models who have a mind of their own. I can't recommend her enough.
