Today is Titan's four year adoptiversary! Titan came to our family from Animal House Rescue at six months old. I had begged for a second dog since shortly after we adopted Beatrice, but we knew we really had to wait until we had a yard. So about three weeks after we moved into our house, I convinced my husband, Daniel, to go meet this six-month-old, white and brown, little cow.
Titan has been almost completely opposite of our first rescue, Beatrice, in personality. He makes friends with anyone, she is wary of strangers. He loves the summer, she loves the winter. She’s a morning person, he is a late snoozer. The two have kept us on our toes and forced us to learn a lot about dogs, breeds, training, and psychology. Titan didn't necessarily fit into our family the way we expected, but he is exactly what we needed.
He will always be my baby boy and my 65lb weighted blanket. He brings so much joy and cheer into our lives. Also a lot of mischief and borking for attention, but his positive attributes are so worth it. Titan is all fun and games until someone is upset... He will climb on top of you and force you to pet him until you feel better.
Owning a "pitbull" (anything that looks like it) comes with a unique responsibility because of the stigma and stereotypes surrounding their breed type. I hope to be able to educate others that any breed of dog can be a wonderful companion if given the proper training, stimulation, and socialization. Are there bad apples in the bunch? Sure. People are diagnosed as sociopaths, narcissists, and psychopaths... it is not a stretch that animals can have cases of neurological defects. They can also be a product of how they are nurtured. Abuse and neglect cause all of us to adopt negative coping mechanisms that we think we need to survive. These issues can be found in any breed. There are just a LOT of pitbull type dogs around and they are big and strong.
I'll try to step off my soapbox here and just encourage all to research your breed's needs before you bring them home.
I personally feel like the luckiest girl in the world to have this handsome boy as my snuggle buddy every evening. Titan, we are so happy we could give you your forever home!
